This is the reason why so many homes went without repair after Hurricane Katrina back in 2005.

The Insurance Information Institute did a poll this year and determined that 14% of homeowners in the U.S have flood insurance.

The most common type of flooding that is covered by a standard homeowners insurance policy is flooding from a busted pipe, keyword busted; slow leaks that cause damage often are not covered as insurance companies will argue the cause of water damage was due to maintenance that should have been kept up with by the homeowners, even though sometimes the slow leak is somewhere inside a wall where you could have no idea a leak actually exists.

The Augusta Chronicle recently announced a low average of insurance fraud cases in Aiken County, South Carolina. Of the $14.5 million in suspected fraud cases, South Carolina, $66,000 was accounted for suspected fraud in Aiken County. There were a total of 13 cases out of 600 that originated out of South Carolina.

It was also reported that of the $14.5 million, auto insurance related fraud made of $11.9 million. Fraud is one risk taken into consideration by the insurance company when rating an individual’s auto policy. When a county shows a lower than average insurance fraud, this could possibly result in lower than average insurance rates for residents of this county. There are of course many other factors taken into consideration such a accident statistics in this county compared to other counties, age of the driver and each individuals driving history.

In 2009 Aiken County had a population of 156,017. Our last crime data we were able to come up with was reported in 2005. Crime data is also used to determine rates for auto, home, health and life insurance. Provided below is that data.

•	Assaults: 208
•	Auto thefts: 328
•	Burglaries: 778
•	Murders: 7
•	Rapes: 53
•	Robberies: 59
•	Thefts: 1540

Aiken County Health Insurance

According to a study conducted by the CDC shows that on a score rating between 1 and 5, Aiken County is a 3.5 for general health. The reports also showed that over 70% of the residents exercised within the last month. However, with this being reported the average weight of residents is reported to be higher than the average.

The average weight of men: 198 lbs.
The average weight of women: 162 lbs.

With health insurance rates being as high as they are, exercise and good health is quickly becoming the one thing people can do to significantly reduce health insurance quotes and rates offered by companies. With a healthy body comes very little risk of health issues – not to mention a healthier more fulfilling life. Making lifestyle changes is difficult but can be very rewarding.

North Carolina lawmakers are attempting to push SB 490, a bill which could greatly effect the auto insurance rates offered to North Carolina Drivers. North Carolina is currently the 8th state for the lowest auto insurance rates. Could this be changing soon due to SB 490?

North Carolina’s Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin is opposed the bill and explains how this bill will take some of the commissioners authority away, authority that any driver wants on their side. The state commissioner places caps on the rates insurance companies offer no allowing companies to charge to high of rates. One this bill goes into effect that authority will be taken away leaving the insurance companies open to jacking the rates up however they like.

So generally this may bring more insurance companies in that now can offer coverage since they are not held down by the rate caps. Just because there will be more competition, this does not mean the rates will be lower. Everyone will be competing while offering rates that are higher than what you pay now.

Goodwin said, “These proposals are pushed by out-of-state insurance companies who want to make more money off of North Carolina drivers. There is no doubt that car insurance rates will go up if any of these proposals becomes a reality. The insurance companies are trying to get the legal authority to charge you higher rates even if you have a perfect driving record.”

A big insurance fraud scheme was uncovered by a 13 month investigation conducted by the DA’s insurance fraud unit. Those busted in this crime include a Philadelphia police officer, a personal injury attorney, seven insurance appraisers and a Philadelphia collision repair shop – University Collision Centers.

This scheme netted this group of fraudsters millions over four years. A total of 11 suspects were charged for what some call a victimless crime – which is far from the truth. As more fraud occurs, insurance rates increase. So in actuality everyone who has auto insurance may find themselves paying for this type of crime.

The investigation revealed that this Collision repair shop worked with Appraisers who would inflate the vehicle damage appraisals in exchange for kickbacks, some kickbacks being as high as $1,000.

Those arrested include:

Gary Cottrell, a 44 year old 15 yr veteran to the 14th district police department known to be a “wreck chaser” who would refer accident victims to University Collision Center.

Michael Wolf was a 52 year old attorney out of Phoenixville, Chester County, who advised University Collision Center and also filed a number of phony personal injury claims.

Edward Hildebrandt was the owner of the Collision Center with centers in Gray’s Ferry and Manayunk with David Coleman, the manager. There were also seven car damage appraisers.

The seven vehicle damage appraisers included four from Philadelphia, two from Cherry Hill and one from Mullica Hill in South Jersey.

District Attorney Seth Williams says his office was contacted by State Farm Insurance Company on February 2010 regarding the operations at University Collision Centers.

What are these people thinking? Recent news indicates such a case where Paul Daniel Cornejo, 29, a California licensed Broker was arrested at his home residence in Adelanto, California. Cornejo was arrested on four counts of Grand Theft, three counts of Forgery, two counts of Theft by False Pretense and finally three misdemeanor counts of Theft.

Now booked into San Bernardino’s county jail, Cornejo’s bail is set at $400,000. At this time his arraignment is pending.
Between April of 2008 and March of 2010 authorities received several complaints from victims who stated that Cornejo collected premium payments from long distance trucking companies. Instead of turning over the funds to the insurance companies this guy would simply pocket the funds and provide these companies with fake certificates of insurance. Sadly these companies were never protected. Currently victim losses are approximately $38,000.

Cornejo did business, in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, as Royal Insurance Group Services, Inc and TATEMAS Truck Insurance Services.

If you feel that you may be a victim should call the Investigation Division at 909-919-2233
Currently AdultBasic, PA’s current low income health insurance is insuring nearly 40,000 residents with another 400,000 still remaining on the waiting list.

After negotiation an agreement was made with Blue Cross which would waive the normal restrictions with those dealing with preexisting conditions who move to the Blues’ special care plan from the AdultBasic. It’s been mentioned that the Blues’ plan offers much less benefits at a much higher price than the AdultBasic.

According to the Pennsylvania Association of Health Underwriters (PAHU), there are only a few solutions if the cost of AdultBasic rise with increases in demand:

1.	The legislation will have to kick people out of the program.
2.	Taxes will need to be raised on Pennsylvania citizens or businesses.
3.	Money will need to be taken away from other deserving needs such as education.

Progressive Corp has always been a great company with superior customer service and easy auto insurance policy online management. Some earlier news this year showed a 15% loss in the first part of 2010. Claims have also risen 3.5% in 2010’s first 6 months ending on June 30th with a total of $4.97 billion.

One question I hear sometimes is, “why did my insurance rate go up, I haven’t had any accidents, tickets or claims?” Sometimes company earnings can also cause an increase in your auto insurance rate. Online research has shown that recently customers have experienced an increase with their insurance rates; this could be caused by many factors other than accidents, tickets, claims or even company profits. Anytime you move, add someone to the policy, add a vehicle, or get older – your rate can be affected. This is why I find it important to compare rates once a year.

Progressive Corp., the U.S being the 4th largest auto insurance provider in the States stated that profit has dropped 15% on investment write downs. The Company’s net income dropped to $211.9 million from $250.1 million in its 2nd quarter. Standard & Poor’s downgraded the auto insurer from AA+ rating to AA due to “Vulnerability to Earnings Volatility” from investment.

Paul Newsome, Sandler O’Neill & Partners analyst from Chicago’s mentions how the company tends to maintain a “modestly more aggressive investment portfolio.” The loss of $39.5 million was confirmed prior to taxes in the three months ending on June 30th of 2010 which was compared to the $15.9 million investment gain in 2009.

Florida seems to think so which is why the state has made these “truck nutz” illegal throughout the entire state. It’s but another crack down on freedom of expression. If caught driving around with a pair hanging you can be fined as much as $60. I personally think spinners, cell phones, texting and even bumper stickers can be more distracting than a pair of fake testicles hanging below a trucks bumper. Most times I don’t even realize their existence.

However others have found it to be crude and distasteful. I do try to see both sides of an argument. I see how some may not want to explain to little kids, what exactly those things are hanging under the neighbors truck. But then again, I have kids and they’ve never even thought to ask me what they are, I believe they think it’s just part of the truck; maybe a special hitch. Some people figure everything is becoming distasteful in American from radio and TV to they type of clothing people wear. So the question may be, “why should I have to see fake rubber testicles on the way to work? Isn’t there enough crude things in life we must deal with?”

How about the risks? Are there any insurance risks to having these hanging from your vehicle? What if someone hit you from behind and they flew off and hit some pedestrian in the face? Could that really happen? I’ve never put balls on any of my vehicles. Are they installed pretty securely?

Enforcement Zone

I’d really like to get your views on the whole fake testicle car accessory issue. Are you for or against them? Do you find them to be a distraction while driving on the road?
